Asbestos ABC's - The Basics

What Is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a natural mined mineral. Its very nature, long, thin cotton-like fibers, make it a wonderfully useful material, but also make it deadly. The fact that it can be spun and woven just like cotton only served to ensure its widespread use. Prior to 1989, asbestos was used in drywall joint compound, textured wall treatments, vinyl floor tiles, ceiling tiles, roofing materials, including shingles, siding, certain types of countertops, concrete, bricks, and pipe and electrical insulation, in addition to many uses outside of construction.
Asbestos is still in use as a building material in China, India and other countries, but it has been banned for most uses in the United States since the late 1980's when its phase out began.
What Should You Do About It?
The form it is in, such as asbestos siding, may not harmful. However, the mere suspicion of it can scare away prospective buyers or kill your deal. Therefore, even if you only suspect that asbestos may be present, get it tested for and if present, get it remediated. Because asbestos was so widely used, many remediation services are available, but it must be done by a licensed contractor who specializes in asbestos removal.
There are two basic ways of dealing with asbestos: Removing it or sealing it so it cannot become airborne. Removal by a contractor licensed by the federal or state EPA is the gold standard. However, like many gold-standards, it is expensive. Sealing costs much less and may be appropriate under certain circumstances.
I would definitely not recommend this as a do-it-yourself project.
REMEMBER: Because of asbestos' hazard to health, once you are aware of it, you should get it remediated. Of course, once you are aware of a its presence, you will need to disclose it. This is another reason to correct problems before putting your house on the market, if it is gone, it can no longer be a problem.

Why Should You Take Legal Action if You Have Contracted Mesothelioma?

Why should you take legal action if you have contracted mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure?
When most people are diagnosed with mesothelioma, it comes as a blow to them and they are shattered. They are unable to collect their senses and think logically and practically. They become deeply & emotionally upset. Therefore, they fail to take any legal action as they feel all this will add more to their pain and suffering. It is very important that all these people realize that taking legal action upon contracting mesothelioma, due to asbestos exposure, is their right.
What are the rights of the mesothelioma patients?
The mesothelioma patients who have contracted the disease due to asbestos exposure have the following rights:1. Right to receive medical treatment at cancer centers irrespective of the cost involved 2. Right to be compensated for the pain and suffering 3. Right to peace of mind about the welfare of dependents after death. 4. Right to take action against those responsible for bringing the patient to such a condition.
Dangers of asbestos
Asbestos is a wonder mineral. This fibrous substance is heat-resistant, fire-resistant, chemical-resistant and flexible. It can be mixed with cement and paint, woven to make fireproof clothing and can also be used in ship building industry. However, in the 1900s itself, the medical fraternity started to slowly wake-up to the harmful effects of asbestos. They realized that people who worked in asbestos related industries had severe lung problems. Slowly in the 1930s the diseases caused by asbestos, like asbestosis, fibrosis, asbestos warts and so on were recognized and named. But it was only in the 1940s that mesothelioma was clearly identified. After that, asbestos has been banned or restricted in most of the countries.
Mesothelioma and asbestos
When asbestos is mined, manufactured or used, a lot of asbestos fibers and asbestos dust are released into the atmosphere. Since these are light and invisible, humans easily inhale them. Once they are inhaled they enter the body and travel around. Many body organs like the lungs, abdomen and heart have a covering called as mesothelium lining. When asbestos comes into contact with this lining, the mesothelium cells start dividing rapidly. Also, they start to outlive the other normal cells. This causes tumors in that part, which may also spread to other parts soon. This condition is called as mesothelioma.
Selfish attitude of Industrialists
Most of the asbestos-related industries' owners knew about the harmful effects of asbestos. However, their selfish attitude made them to try and cover up the harmful effects of asbestos. They tried to bribe researchers, hide the truth, cover-up facts and continue production. They did not provide any safeguards to the employees. The poor and ignorant workers were not even warned about the dangers of asbestos. No precaution was taken to safeguard the laborers. The short-term economic gains made the rich businessmen blind to long term health hazards.
This makes it clear that it is your right to take legal action if you have contracted mesothelioma, due to asbestos exposure.

How Much Compensation Can Be Claimed In A Mesothelioma Case?

How much compensation can be claimed during a mesothelioma legal suit?
Mesothelioma is caused due to exposure to asbestos. This gives a right to mesothelioma patients to sue all those who were responsible for their condition. Normally, the people who were held responsible for negligence are
- Asbestos factory owners- Asbestos mine owners- Asbestos-products manufacturers- Insurance companies
There are some legal issues involved when the litigation process goes on which may affect the compensation that can be claimed. For instance, it has been scientifically proved that smokers had a higher chance of contracting mesothelioma. So, a smoker, who has ruined his health, may not be able to claim as much compensation as a non-smoker.
Choosing a mesothelioma lawyerNormally, the compensation paid to mesothelioma patients is enormous. It attracts a lot of coverage in the press and media. This is because the people responsible were negligent towards your health. Also, they did not provide adequate safeguards to protect you in spite of knowing that exposure to asbestos is hazardous. Therefore, a mesothelioma patient has the right to claim a huge compensation to satisfy and compensate for the following losses: -
- Loss of quality of life - Loss of loved ones - Pain and suffering - Medical expenses - And so on.
How to choose a mesothelioma lawyer?
Since a mesothelioma case involves a huge sum as compensation, the lawyer that you choose has to be an expert in his field. So, you have to choose him with care. Keep the following points in mind when choosing a mesothelioma lawyer:
1. Check his knowledge in handling the case.2. See whether he has experience in mesothelioma cases.3. Speak to his clients to check on his expertise.4. Do not fall for him just because of his policy of "No win-No fees"' He may charge an exorbitant sum if you win the settlement.5. Check whether you are happy and comfortable working with him.
Situation in AmericaIn the next decade, the number of mesothelioma cases in America is expected to skyrocket. After this, it is expected that there will be a gradual decline. Because the government has undertaken the necessary safety precautions, the number of cases will also reduce. There have been certain situations of false blame also in mesothelioma cases or cases where the blame was made on the wrong person.
Situation in other countries: The situation in the other countries that did not take adequate precautions is deplorable. If the culture of lodging cases on the negligent people becomes a norm in these countries, then thousands of cases are going to flood the courts. Though this is an ideal situation, there may be people who may take advantage of this situation.
So before taking up a mesothelioma case, check up whether you have chosen the right lawyer who will charge the correct fee structure. Also, decide on the right compensation that you feel will be due to you based on the following factors:
- The level of negligence of your employers - The safeguards options provided to you - The knowledge you had about the hazards - Whether you are a smoker - How much have others won in similar cases - Medical expenditure.
Remember, the compensation will be an insurance for the future of the loved ones that you leave behind.

Cover-up by Asbestos Industries

In the 1970s, the US government stepped in to ban asbestos related products in America. However, much before this, the hazards of asbestos were researched and documented. In the early Greek and Roman times itself, it was pointed out that the slaves who worked in asbestos quarries or who wore clothes woven with asbestos suffered from lung damage. In the late 20th century, physicians started realizing that various respiratory problems and pulmonary problems affected those who inhaled asbestos dust. In 1906, for the first time, a death was documented as caused by asbestos exposure.
Most of the asbestos related diseases have a very long latency period. Sometimes, even up to 40 years. So, the diseases were not recognized and named for many years. In the beginning of the twentieth century, the various diseases caused due to exposure to asbestos were identified. However, it was in the 1940s only that mesothelioma was recognized and named. At every stage, the asbestos companies tried to cover up their acts. They tried to bribe officials and threaten researchers to give up all studies on the hazards of asbestos.
They did not provide any safeguards to their employees. The safeguards, which would have protected their employees from asbestosis, mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases, are § protective clothing, § protective masks, § protective gloves, § protective shoes and§ a bath before going home from the industry or mine and so on.
Since the asbestos companies did not want their employees to have any inkling about the hazards of asbestos, they provided none of the above safeguards to their employees. Also, they concealed the medical reports of their employees, who died due to asbestos-related deaths. All this information was also concealed from the other employees. Many large Corporations were facing lots of asbestos related lawsuits. To avoid such legal issues that marred their status, they demanded their lawyers to settle these cases out-of-court. After this, the main asbestos corporations conducted research studies to find out about the hazards of working with asbestos. When the results of these studies were released, the industrialists hushed up most of the shocking research results and released only a modified report to their employees and the general public.
The dangers caused by asbestos are not limited to only asbestosis, fibrosis and asbestos warts but also extends to lung cancer. Asbestos first leads to breathing difficulties, heart enlargement, dry cough and coughing up blood. Though this sounds terrible, lung cancer is even more horrible. Tumors are caused in the body parts like lungs, abdomen or heart. These tumors may also spread throughout the body, with death being the inevitable conclusion to the patients suffering.
As soon as the asbestos companies sensed that asbestos leads to cancer, they became tensed. They started to cover up these research reports. They felt scared that their economic profits were threatened. Thus, they did not care about the hazards of asbestos on the health of their employees. In some of the factories, the supervisors and others, who knew about the hazards of asbestos, tried to provide some safeguards to the employees. However, the owners tried to stop them as they did not want their laborers to have even inkling about the dangers of exposure to asbestos.
In spite of all this, several medical professionals and research organizations brought out reports highlighting the terrible health problems caused by exposure to asbestos. Only in the 1970s action was taken to reduce asbestos exposure. In 1973, it was stated that spray-on asbestos insulation is an air pollution hazard. Then, the EPA banned spray-on asbestos insulation. Further, in the end of 1970s, information began to surface that asbestos companies and industrialists covered up the hazards of asbestos and suppressed valuable information. It annoyed and enraged people all around the world that their employers were so selfish about their profits. Also, the companies wanted to avoid legal risks by the employees and their families.
After this, the US banned all types of asbestos. Many other countries also followed US example, but the damage has been done long back. The suppression of information did not give any choice to the laborers and thus, they were Exposed to asbestos. Because of the long latency period of asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma, these people are still suffering from these diseases and will continue to suffer for another decade or two.

High Risk Industries For Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos is a wonder mineral that is fibrous by nature. It is fire resistant, chemical resistant and very strong. It can be easily woven into cloth to make fireproof clothing. Despite being such a wonderful substance, it is very hazardous to the employees and laborers, who work with it. It leads to various diseases like asbestosis, fibrosis, asbestos warts and even, cancer. Mesothelioma, a killer disease, is the most terrible of all the diseases caused by exposure to asbestos. Due to this, asbestos use, mining and manufacture were banned in many countries a few decades ago. But, there are still many countries like India and china, which have not imposed a complete ban on asbestos. Even those developed countries, which have banned asbestos, are still reaping the troubles of asbestos exposure. This is because the diseases caused due to asbestos exposure have a long latency period. For instance, mesothelioma may take even 40 years to develop after asbestos exposure.
One problem with asbestos is what when it is mined and manufactured a lot of asbestos dust and asbestos fibers are released into the atmosphere. Since these are light and invisible, the laborers easily inhale them. The trouble starts after this, as these fibers are very harmful when inhaled. For instance, when the asbestos fibers come in contact with the mesothelium lining, they react adversely with the cells leading to tumors. The tumors may appear in body parts like lungs, hearts and abdomen. This disease is called as mesothelioma. These tumors may also spread throughout the body, finally leading to dearth.
The following industries have high risk for exposure to asbestos:
Contractors or construction workers:
Since asbestos is very strong, flexible and fireproof, it is a highly preferred material in all types of construction work. In some way or in some form, asbestos is present in paints, cement, tubes, pipes, and sheets and so on. Not only the laborers but also residents, school children in schools, officers in offices and all others face a risk of asbestos exposure.
Firefighters:
In yester years, firefighters wore clothing woven with asbestos. This fireproof clothing gave rise to various health hazards due to asbestos exposure. Even now when old buildings collapse due to fire, firefighters become exposed to asbestos.
Power plants:
The boilers and generators of power plants are mostly lined with asbestos. This is done to protect it from intense heat and sudden fires.
Automotive mechanics:
Mechanics work with brakes and clutch linings, which contain asbestos. Thus, they get exposed to asbestos. Even though asbestos is banned now, the old vehicles still contain such asbestos parts.
Miners:
Minerals like vermiculite and talc contain asbestos. Thus, not only the asbestos miners but miners of these minerals too will suffer from asbestos exposure.
Shipyards:
Most of the components in ships like hot water pipes, incinerators insulation, boilers and steam pipes contain asbestos. Since asbestos is fire proof, chemical proof, strong and flexible, it is popularly used in ship components. Therefore, shipyard workers have high risk of developing asbestos related diseases like mesothelioma. During the Second World War, there was widespread use of asbestos and in US alone, more than 4 million people worked in shipyards. Overhauling and destruction of old ships also releases a lot of asbestos dust and is thus, very hazardous.
Railroads:
Just like automotives and ships, railroads also made use of asbestos in steam pipes, boilers, gaskets, brakes and clutches.
Steel Mills:
Asbestos is expected to be present in the thermal Insulation Substances used in steel mills.
Oil refineries:
It is expected that many parts in the oil refineries also contain asbestos, as the rate of mesothelioma is very high among the refinery workers.
While this gives us an in-depth knowledge about how asbestos affects the various areas of workplace, this is not conclusive. It is important to take proper care and be vigilant to prevent asbestos exposure.

Legal Advice On Evaluating A Mesothelioma Case

The asbestos companies and industrialists knew about the hazards of asbestos on the health of workers. Also, these laborers carried home these asbestos fibers and asbestos dust and their family and neighbors inhaled these harmful substances. Because of this, asbestos-related diseases affected not only the workers but also their family members.
The owners and rich industrialists provided no safeguards to their laborers. They did not provide§ proper ventilation, § safeguard masks and § protective clothing as even these would cost them extra money.
The short-term economic profits made them blind to the long-term health hazards of their workers. They either concealed the dangers of asbestos or downplayed it from their employees. Still, even now-days, most of the workers don't know about the hazards of this mineral. Many of the men don't even know that they are working with asbestos. Due to negligence of the asbestos companies, many people are suffering from § loss of quality of life§ loss of loved ones,§ loss of ability to work, § medical expenses, § pain and suffering and § DEATH.
Mesothelioma is caused only because of exposure to asbestos. It has no known cure. The disease has a very long latency period. So, most of the people who were exposed to the disease in their youth contract the disease in their old age. They do not connect their condition to the exposure to asbestos because of the very long 20-50 year gap. The symptoms of the disease are similar to other benign diseases. So, they consider it as signs of ageing and ignore them. Therefore, when they are properly diagnosed, they are in their final stages of cancer. They have only a few weeks or months of life left. This comes as a huge mental and emotional shock for them.
Treatments for mesothelioma
Sometimes, rarely, the disease is detected in the early stages itself. Then, the treatment for the disease helps to reduce the pain and suffering of the patient and the life expectancy is increased. The treatments that are performed during mesothelioma include
§ chemotherapy, to relieve the intensity of the symptoms, § radiation therapy, to retard and reduce the tumors and § surgery, to remove the body areas affected by tumors so that the disease is cured.
All these medical treatments are very expensive.
Procedural aspects of a mesothelioma case:
Every mesothelioma patient has a right to take legal action against those responsible for his or her condition. The first thing to do upon being diagnosed with mesothelioma is to contact a good mesothelioma lawyer. He will evaluate and review your case and help you with the course of action to be taken. Most mesothelioma lawyers do not charge any fees. Only when a monetary settlement or reward is arrived at, they may charge a fee or percentage of the settlement or reward.
You have to provide the lawyers with as much help as possible. Get all your paperwork done. Make it as clear and comprehensive as possible. The lawyers will evaluate your case on the following grounds.1) History of your healthThe lawyers will evaluate the history based on the diagnosis and all the medical information supplied.
2) History of asbestos exposureThe lawyers will evaluate the level and nature of asbestos exposure in your case and the case will depend on this. He will need to know about § whether you knew you were exposed to asbestos, § whether you were aware of the hazards of asbestos § whether you were exposed as a part of your occupation § whether you lived in an asbestos exposed neighborhood or§ Whether the factory was fireproofed with Asbestos.
3) Source of asbestos exposureThe lawyer will need to know the exact source of asbestos exposure. Sometimes, it is difficult to spot this and you have to work it out with the help of your lawyer.
4) The litigation history of the company Many companies have already been sued many times for asbestos-related issues. These companies may not want to face another litigation. They may agree to an out of court settlement. However, if this is the first case for the company, then they may want to go in for a trial. Do not worry. It will only be beneficial for you.
It is your duty to help your lawyers to correctly pinpoint the source and also determine the amount of compensation that you require. Remember, though money cannot comfort you, it is an insurance for the life and comfort of the loved ones that you leave behind. So, do not fear to ask your desired amount of compensation.

Types of Asbestos

Most people do not know that asbestos is a natural substance. They assume it to be a substance made by man for commercial purposes. Asbestos is a fibrous mineral found in nature and mined by man to use for various purposes. The wonder of this mineral is that it is fire resistant, chemical resistant, highly strong, and completely flexible and has very low electrical conductivity. Due to the above reasons, asbestos is used for a variety of purposes in various industries. Some of them are:
§ Asbestos is widely used in the construction industry because of its fireproof quality.§ Asbestos can be easily woven into cloth and is thus used to make fire poof clothing.§ Asbestos is used to make gaskets and pipes. § It is used in the shipbuilding industry. § This popular substance was first used in 1828, in steam engines, as a lining material.§ For many years, it was used to make floorings, brake linings and clutch facings in automobiles. § It is shocking to note that asbestos was used in making toothpaste and surgical incision thread too.
Broad classification of asbestos
There are two broad categories into which all types of asbestos can be classified. They are as follows:a) Serpentine group:This type of asbestos has a layered form and the fibers are curly. This is why it is called as 'serpentine'. This group has just one member, called chrysolite. Basically, This is the most common type of asbestos.
b) Amphibole group This is considered to be the most hazardous type of asbestos. It has straight fibers. Unlike the serpentine group, it has a chain like structure. Five kinds of asbestos are found in the amphibole group.
Sub classification of asbestos
There are six types of asbestos found on earth. Let us see about each of them below:
Chrysolite: It is also popularly called as white asbestos, chrysolite is the most common type of asbestos. It belongs to the serpentine group. The construction industry makes vast use of this type of asbestos. Since this type of asbestos is widely used, the majority of the asbestos-related health problems globally are caused due to chrysolite. It is used in the following materials:§ fire proofing materials, § insulation, § woven to form asbestos clothes, § cement pipes, § cement Sheets, § automobile brake shoes, § clutches, § disk pads, § textiles, § plastics, § paper,§ rubber and § even in nuclear industry.
It has been proved by medical science that chrysolite also leads to various asbestos- related diseases, including mesothelioma. However, the asbestos industrialists are trying to hush up these studies. They keep claiming that it is not harmful. They do all that is possible in their power to stop the government from banning chrysolite. The result is that asbestos is still widely used in India, Canada, Africa, China and some other countries.
Though the developed countries have banned asbestos some years back, it is still found in many buildings and commercial products. If this is the case in developed countries, it is frightening to think of the future situation in the other countries.
Amosite:
This belongs to the amphibole category of asbestos. It has very stiff and Strong fibers. These fibers get easily air borne and are Very dangerous when inhaled through the nose or mouth. It is known as brown asbestos. It is mostly used for insulating purposes. Most of the countries have banned this amosite several decades ago itself. After chrysolite, this was the most popularly used type of asbestos.
Crocidolite:
This is a very rare type of asbestos belonging to the amphibole category. It is mostly used to reinforce plastics as it is highly strong. It is slightly blue in color. It is also used in thermal insulation.
The other three types of asbestos are not used to make any commercial products and thus, cause no harm.
How asbestos leads to mesothelioma?
When asbestos is mined and manufactured, a lot of asbestos dust and asbestos fibers are released into the atmosphere. Man can easily inhale this dust because it is light, invisible and airborne. Once it enters the body, either through nose or mouth, it travels throughout the body. The body organs like lungs, heart and abdomen have a lining called as mesothelium lining. When asbestos comes into contact with this lining, it starts behaving abnormally. It starts to divide rapidly and begins to outlive the other cells, leading to tumors in that area. This may also spread to the other parts of the body, leading to the terrible disease called as mesothelioma cancer. Thus, it would be in the best interest of all if this dangerous mineral, asbestos, were banned globally.

Mesothelioma - How Do You Predict?

Let's start first with what is Mesothelioma? "A usually malignant tumor of mesothelial tissue, especially that of the pleura or peritoneum." This is the fundamental definition of the deadly disease Mesothelioma according to the Merriam-Webster Medical Dictionary.
Mesothelium tissues circle around the lungs, heart and abdominal region of your body. This is medically termed as Mesothelium lining in the body that protects your internal organs. When you inhale air containing asbestos dust particles, the air directly hits the Mesothelium lining in the body. This is basically how your body gets exposed to the asbestos fibers without actually letting you know what further damages it would cause at the later stage of your life.
Instant symptoms
Mesothelioma doesn't pop up with instant symptoms. This is one of the biggest reasons that till date a clear-cut treatment procedure has not been formulated to cure the Mesothelioma patients. When the problem is finally diagnosed no time is left for any treatment because the patient has already reached the last stage.
Again a common symptom of Mesothelioma is that it is detected when the patient has reached the age of fifty or sixty. At this age the person's normal immunity level becomes quite low. And it becomes rather difficult for the person to cope with this situation. At the young age the symptoms remain hidden and come in fragments when neither the patient not the doctor is able to detect and the treatment is confined to some petty common diseases.
Cancerous symptoms
Chronic level of gastric disorder Severe pains in the regions circling the heart and the lungs. This is from the external side but the problem lies beneath in the cavities of the body's internal regions circled by the Mesothelium lining.
Excessive vomiting can be a valid symptom that is often mistaken for acidity and gastric problem. But it is very much related to Mesothelioma.
Difficulties while breathing and frequently feeling short of oxygen while undergoing even some small tasks.
Someone carrying all these symptoms cannot be readily considered as a Mesothelioma patient. But if it is confirmed that the person had a long history of working in an asbestos company, if they have dwelled in a place near an asbestos firm, or if there was an indirect way to come in touch with asbestos fibers. It can be assured that together with the combination of all these symptoms the person is very likely suffering from Mesothelioma cancer.

Signs Of Lung Cancer

Signs of Lung Cancer, the signs and symptoms to check for. It seems as though today more and more people are having pulmonary problems which can be signs of Lung Cancer.
Let us take a look at the signs of Lung Cancer and it's symptoms; suppose you are having pulmonary problems and you believe that these are the Signs of Lung Cancer, it is a good idea to go to a physician to have tests done, this is the only way of knowing you have lung cancer.
First of all, you may want to know that there are four types of Lung Cancer, these four types of Lung Cancer are: small cell lung cancer, squamous cell carcinoma lung cancer, large cell carcinoma lung cancer and adenocarcinoma lung cancer. All of these four are most likely linked to smoking or second degree smoke, but it is also known that the Signs of Lung Cancer can have an inherited component to this. There is a research being done, that maybe the signs of Lung Cancer can be linked to diet, but that is still in the research arena, but some signs of Lung Cancer can be related to diet.
The symptoms and signs of Lung Cancer are difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, chest pain, loss of appetite, weight loss and general fatigue, but there are some signs of Lung Cancers that do not have any noticeable symptoms, this is because this type is not in the advance stages yet, this type of Lung Cancer is where it has spread to other parts of the body, and therefore it is hard to see these signs of Lung Cancer.
Sometimes the signs of Lung Cancer can be detected by a simple chest x-ray but sometimes with the signs of Lung Cancer you have to have a test called bronchoscopy, this test is when a thin, flexible tube is inserted down the airways of the throat and this allows the doctors to see the inside of the lungs, sometimes they will take a biopsy to determine if the Lung Cancer has spread, they will have to take other tests depending on the type of Lung Cancer, such as a CT Scan, liver ultrasound or bone scan maybe this will determine if the Lung Cancer has spread to other areas.
Now, depending on the type of Lung Cancer depends on the treatment that is used a drug treatment maybe used for small lung cancers this is called (chemotherapy) this is the usual treatment for the signs of small lung cancer, radiotherapy is therefore used for the other types of Lung Cancer that I had mentioned earlier. Although Lung Cancer is one of the most dangerous Lung Cancers there are, remember there is still a cure and hope (we always have hope) for Lung Cancer or any type of cancer.
In Lung Cancer the drug treatments that I mentioned, cause bruising, fatigue, hair loss, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting, but the nausea and vomiting can be assisted with other medications and the hair loss? well..the hair will grow back.
If you feel that you may have Lung Cancer and have these symptoms, please see your doctor and get these tests done, Lung Cancer can spread to other parts of the body, and the sooner you find the problem, the sooner you it can be treated.
With Lung Cancer it is impairative that you get help and treated immediately. Lung Cancer can be deadly as we all know so take the tests and if you have Lung Cancer, donut let it beat you. You beat Lung Cancer.

Lung Cancer Symptom

Most of the cases of this disease are asymptomatic the disease is revealed as a result of routine radiological examination of the chest, but some patient also show symptoms and signs. The main symptoms include cough, dyspnea, wheeze, stridor and sometimes pneumonia due to bronchial obstruction.
If the tumour grows within the lung tissue it can cause pain. Sometimes patient can demonstrate symptoms of abscess formation due to tumour caviation. The spreading of tumour regionally can also result in dysphagia due to esophageal compression, hoarseness due to laryngeal nerve paralysis, dyspnea due to phrenic nerve paralysis and horner syndrome due to sympathetic nerve paralysis. Pancoasts syndrome is result of extension of tumour in the apex of the lungs which involves last cervical and first and second thoracic nerves compression of the nerves results in shoulder pain.
Cancer can spread in practically all organs. This type of cancer can spread in brain causing some neurological problems, in bones causing pain and fractures, bone marrow invasion causing cytopenias, liver metastases resulting in biochemical imbalance, adrenal metastases is also common but it does not results in insufficiency. systemic symptoms like anorexia, cachexia, suppressed immunity, weight loss, fever are general symptoms practically found in all patients in the later stages.
In some patients we can find hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia due to ectopic parathyroid hormone releasing tumours.
Skeletal-connective tissue syndrome that is clubbing of fingers can also be seen in some patients. Some times retinal blindness is seen in patients suffering from small cell cancer.
Dermatological manifestations like dermatomyositis and acanthosis nigricans are also seen in some patients but very rarely.

High Dose Radiation Therapy Improves Survival in Patients with Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is very rare disease, but once it strikes, death becomes inevitable. This lethal disease is caused due to exposure to asbestos. A recent research study conducted has found an innovative idea to increase the survival rate and survival period of mesothelioma patients.
The researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) have conducted this research and they have presented their findings before the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology (ASTRO). This study was conducted between 1900 and 2000 and it was performed on various patients at different stages of mesothelioma.
According to this study, the cancer surgery for removal of the lung and lining has to be extensive and this should be followed by a heavy dosage of radiation therapy to achieve the desired results. They had observed that these patients did not suffer from the toxic effects. They seem to be able to bear the treatment and tolerate is well.
"For many years we were unable to give too much radiation to the chest because of extreme toxicity, but new technologies and treatment techniques have helped us get around that," said Santosh Yajnik, MD, radiation oncologist at MSKCC and lead author of the study. In this study, the entire affected lung of patients was removed. This also facilitated in giving a high dose of radiation therapy.
MSKCC is one of the centers, which has facilities for offering this type of treatment. Nearly 63 patients at the MSKCC were treated using extensive surgery. On an average, it was seen that their survival improved by 5 to 6 months by this type of treatment.
Also, the researchers found that people who approached them in the early stages had better survival rates as compared to those who approached them in the last stages of cancer.

Lung Cancer - Non-Small Cell

The lung cancer is divided into two main types. These are non small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer the non small cell lung cancer is further divided into several types according to the cell structure under the microscope. There are three main types of non small cell lung cancer- squamous cell carcinoma; large cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma.
Squamous cell carcinoma is also known as epidermoid carcinoma.squamous cells look like thin flat cell under the microscope. Large cell carcinoma can begin from different types of the large cells.
Adenocarcinoma begin from the mucus secreting cells of the alveoli.
The other rare subtypes of non small cell lung carcinoma are carcinoid, pleomorphic and salivary gland carcinoma.
The most common risk factor of lung cancer is smoking persistent smoking increases the risk year by year.cessation of smoking decreases the risk but risk is never completely gone. Other risk factors include exposure to air pollution, radiation therapy, asbestos, radon, chromium, arsenic, soot and tar.
Most of the times the lung cancer is asymptomatic that is without signs and symptoms and is found during the routine radiological examination. The main signs and symptoms include persistent cough, difficult breathing, hoarseness of voice, loss of appetite,l oss of weight and tiredness. The tests which should be performed for diagnosis and staging of non small cell lung cancer include chest radiological examination, CT scanning, PET scanning for detection of malignant cells, sputum cytology, fine needle aspiration biopsy, bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy and thoracocentesis.
The features which affect the prognosis of the disease include general condition of the patient, type of the lung cancer and severity of the symptoms.

Lung Cancer Treatment

The treatment of lung cancer depend on stage of cancer, type of cancer and the age of the patient. The general condition of the patient also have a great effect on the choice of treatment for him for example if a person is suffering from asthma along with cancer he is not a candidate for surgery. Sometimes the side effects of the treatment are so serious that a physician prefers to treat the patient only symptomatically for example physician pays attention on pain and difficult breathing rather than on cancer itself.
There are two types of lung cancer small cell and non small cell. Small cell lung cancer is often treated by chemotherapy alone or with combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Surgery is not performed in this type of cancer as this type of cancer always spreads beyond the boundaries of the lung.
The chemotherapy is used to stop the dividing cancer cells. Chemotherapeutic drugs are always used in combinations. The disadvantage of chemotherapy is their hazardous side effects. Chemotherapeutic drugs have a effect on fast dividing cells in the body for example digestive tract and hair cells because of this we often see digestive tract disturbances and falling of hair in the patients taking chemotherapeutic drugs.
There are two types of radiation therapy which are used to treat lung cancer. First one is external and second one is internal. The external one is given in the form of radiations and internal one in the form of injections in the area around the tissue of tumor. Side effects can be redness in the area of skin which received the radiation. Difficulty in swallowing if esophagus is included in the area of radiation therapy. The radiotherapy can be used with chemotherapy or after the chemotherapy.
In the case of non small cell lung cancer surgery is the treatment of choice. Surgery is performed to remove small portion of the lung sometimes lobe and even whole lung is removed it completely depends on the stage of the disease.

The Main Types Of Malignant Mesothelioma Cancer

What is mesothelioma? This name refers to a very rare type of cancer that has some thousands of cases on all over the world. This type on cancer is caused by inhalation of Asbestos. Asbestos are some materials used in construction manufacturers.
There are four types of mesothelioma cancer, three types of them are very dangerous and are very hard to treat, there three types are Pleural Mesothelioma "Tumors develop in lung lining", the second dangerous type is Peritoneal Mesothelioma "Tumors develop on Peritoneum, the outer membrane of the internal organs in the abdominal cavity, the third dangerous type is Pericardial Mesothelioma "Tumors develop in the sac that contain the heart". The fourth type is Benign Mesothelioma and this type is not dangerous.
Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common type of that cancer, the most patients of that cancer are diagnosed as victims. The main reason for this disease is the inhalation of Asbestos, these Asbestos was used at construction manufacturers especially the cement manufacturing companies.
In fact, they can make a law suite to have their compensation rights from the manufacturing companies that let them exposure to Asbestos. the settlement in such cases can reach millions of dollars. There are people can help victims to get their rights and there are many lawyers specify in such settlements.
It is less common than pleural mesothelioma but it is more dangerous. In this case of cancer, tumors develop in the peritoneum, if you don't know what is peritoneum exactly, Peritoneum is the outer line surrounds the internal organs in abdominal cavity.
Pericardial Mesothelioma, the least common type of that cancer, in this case the tumors develop in the heart lining or Pericardium.

Mesothelioma - Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment and Care

Mesothelioma is a rare and deadly form of cancer that affects the lining of the lung, lining of the abdominal cavity or the lining around the heart. It is caused by the exposure to asbestos and occurs in those who have breathed in asbestos fibres. Mesothelioma may not show until 20 to 50 years after the contact with asbestos which is why it was widely used in various industries for many years without anyone realising the damage it was doing to the health of the people working with it. It is estimated that by 2029, 250,000 workers in Western Europe alone will have died from Mesothelioma.
Asbestos is the name given to a group of minerals that occurs naturally in the environment, these bundles of fibres can be separated into thin durable threads which are resistant to heat, fire and chemicals and do not conduct electricity. These properties mean that asbestos was widely used in many industries including building and construction, roofing, fireproofing, shipbuilding and the automotive industry. Asbestos was also used to make ceiling and floor tiles, paint, adhesives and plastics. In the late 1970s the dangers of asbestos were first recognized and it was banned in certain industries. Nowadays asbestos is rarely used at all and any found in domestic or industrial building is carefully removed or encased by experts.
The primary symptom of Mesothelioma is shortness of breath; sufferers may also be affected by a persistent and productive cough, chest tightness, chest pain, loss of appetite and a crackling sound in the lungs when inhaling. Chest X-rays are the most common method of detecting this disease but other techniques can be used such as pulmonary function tests, Biopsy/Bronchoscopy and CT scans. The treatment for Mesothelioma depends on the location of the cancer, how developed it is and the patient's age and general health. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
Everyone is exposed to asbestos at some time as low levels of the mineral are present in the air, water and soil. However it is generally only people who have been exposed to larger quantities on a regular basis who become ill. The main factors which determine how an individual is affected by asbestos exposure are dose, duration, size, shape and chemical makeup of asbestos fibres, source and individual health factors such as smoking and lung condition. Since the 1940s millions of American workers have been exposed to asbestos, some of the most hazardous trades being shipbuilding, asbestos mining and milling and construction and building.
Workers involved in the rescue, recovery and cleanup at the site of the September 11 attacks on the world trade centre are another group at risk of developing Mesothelioma or other asbestos related disease. Asbestos was used in the construction of the North Tower of the WTC and hundreds of tons were released into the atmosphere when the building collapsed. The firefighters, police, paramedics, construction workers and volunteers are most at risk, but also nearby residents and school children will need to be followed to determine the long term consequences of their exposure.

Lung Cancer - Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment and Care

In the UK 38,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year. There are two types of lung cancer; small cell which occurs in 20% of cases and non-small cell which occurs in 80% of cases. Small cell lung cancer is the most dangerous as it travels through to other parts of the body early on and can get into the bloodstream or lymph system quite quickly. Non small cell lung cancer travels more slowly and if caught early can be successfully cured.
Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer although 10% of people with the disease have never smoked. The risk of lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes smoked and the age of the smoker. If a person stops smoking the risks reduce quickly and after 15 years the chances of developing lung cancer are the same as a non-smoker. Breathing in other people's cigarette smoke, known as passive smoking, increases the chances of getting lung cancer but the risks are far less than if you smoke yourself. Those who smoke cigars, pipes or cannabis have a lower risk of lung cancer than cigarette smokers but a far greater risk than non-smokers.
Radon gas in high concentrations is believed to add to the risk of developing lung cancer, this is a naturally occurring gas in some areas and you can get a radon detector to check the levels in your home. In rare cases contact with some chemicals and substances such as uranium, chromium and nickel can also cause lung cancer.
The symptoms of lung cancer can include:
A persistent or long standing coughChest infectionIncreasing breathlessnessCoughing up bloodLoss of appetite and weight Difficulty swallowingExcessive tiredness and lethargy
It is important to get any of these symptoms checked out by a doctor but any could be caused by an illness other than lung cancer.
Diagnosis starts with an examination by a GP who may arrange for x-rays and tests to be conducted at a hospital. The hospital doctors may also do a CT scan or spiral CT scan which is a series of x-rays that build up a three-dimensional picture of the inside of the body and can help find the site and size of the cancer; or a Bronchoscopy which is where the inside of the lung airways are examined with a bronchoscope. This is a thin flexible tube which is passed via the nose or mouth into the airways, the doctor can then look through the bronchoscope to check for abnormalities. Photographs and biopsies can be taken at the same time.
Small cell lung cancer is normally treated with chemotherapy which enables the patient to live longer with better control of the symptoms. Unless small cell lung cancer is found very early surgery is not normally done because the cancer will have spread to other parts of the body before being diagnosed. Sometimes radiotherapy is given to the head to prevent the cancer spreading to the brain and in advanced cases of small cell lung cancer it is used to effectively relieve symptoms such as pain.
Non small cell lung cancer is treated differently depending on the stage of the cancer; at an early stage surgery can be used to remove the cancer and is often followed up with chemotherapy. Radiotherapy may also be used on patients not fit enough or choosing not to have surgery. In advanced stages chemotherapy and radiotherapy are used, sometimes a combination of the two. These are used to maintain a good quality of life for as long as possible and relive pain.

What Is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a horrific disease where a particular type of cell (the mesothelium) divides without control. This division of cells can lead to mesothelioma. If the cells continue to divide and multiply, they may begin to spread to other nearby parts of the body. If it turns malignant, it will spread, uncontrolled, all over the body. Fortunately, as with other types of cancer, mesothelioma can be benign (non cancerous).
Most occurrences of mesothelioma are caused by an exposure to asbestos. It does not take much exposure to cause mesothelioma. However, the cancer can take years to occur, which makes diagnosis of the cancer difficult. Although there is no link between smoking and the onset of mesothelioma, the time frame that it takes to develop mesothelioma has been proven to be reduced by victims with a history of smoking.
The symptoms of mesothelioma can be any or all of the following:
Pain in the chest cavity
Difficulty in breathing
Fatigue
Strong cough or wheezing
Blood being presented during coughing
Anemia
Unfortunately, all normal treatment options used for other types of aggressive cancers have proven to be unsuccessful. Mesothelioma is an aggressive disease which, while taking years to show its presence in the body, will cause the victim to be consumed within a year of being diagnosed.
Because the disease is extremely deadly and would have been easy to prevent if a number of companies had not been negligent, many lawsuits have been submitted regarding the mesothelioma disease. It is known that the first lawsuit was brought around 1929, and since that time, at least 600,000 suits have followed. The US government, from time to time, will try to enact a law to help victims of the disease, none have passed so far.

Fighting Mesothelioma Cancer With Alternative Medicine

Research in alternative medicine and conventional therapies to treat Mesothelioma cancer continues to be on the forefront to try and find a cure for this disease. Until an alternative is discovered and shows promise, conventional drugs and therapies such as Alimta and other chemotherapy drugs, surgery to remove tumors, and radiation therapy will be used to slow the cancer growth.
In addition to conventional treatments, a number of therapies from alternative medicine may be able to reduce symptoms of mesothelioma. Called complementary and alternative medicine, or CAM, this diverse group of medical and health care options and practices aren't considered to be a part of mainstream medical practice. However, that doesn't mean that they're ineffective. Some health care providers practice both CAM and conventional medicine, and combine the two with good results. This is referred to as integrative medicine. As much as thirty-six percent of America's adult population are using some form of CAM. This rises to more than sixty percent if prayer and megavitamin therapy are included in the definition of alternative and complementary practices. Rates of alternative therapy use are highest among patients with serious illnesses such as mesothelioma cancer.
Some treatments offered by alternative medicine include acupuncture to relieve pain following surgery for tumor removal, ginger to treat the nausea and vomiting that chemotherapy causes, massage to treat pain from all kinds of cancers, and combining mistletoe extract with chemotherapy to treat tumors. Immunotherapy, also called biological therapy, is also becoming more common. In this therapy, substances called biological response modifiers are used to improve the immune system's ability to recognize and destroy cancer cells, as well as to fight off other diseases.
Photodynamic therapy uses a drug that sensitizes tissues to light, then destroys cancerous cells by exposing them to a laser set to a specific frequency. Gene therapy is a new, but advancing field which treats potentially fatal diseases by modifying an individual's genes therapeutically. Herbal medicines, traditional practices from countries such as China and Japan, and spiritual treatments are also used in CAM. Not all of these therapies have the ability to affect mesothelioma directly, and their effects will tend to vary by patient. However, they can be a big help in managing symptoms and side effects while using conventional treatments.
Those who are interested in using complementary or alternative medicine in their cancer treatment should ask their health care providers. It's important to get the answers to a few questions when considering any therapy, whether alternative or conventional. Information such as the expected benefits of the therapy versus the risks, the potential side effects, and, in the case of alternative or complementary treatments, whether the therapy will interfere with treatments you're already undergoing are helpful. If the therapy is part of a clinical trial, find out who the sponsor is. Many alternative therapies aren't covered fully by health insurance. Some aren't covered at all. It's important to find out before beginning a CAM therapy whether or not your insurance will pay for it. A good place to start finding out about your options is the NCCAM website at http://nccam.nih.gov. From there, you'll be able to get the information to decide what therapies, both conventional and alternative, are right for you.

Top Three Mesothelioma Treatment Options

Mesothelioma treatment options can be divided into three main options, the first one is the surgery option, the second on is the chemotherapy option and the third one is the radiation options. I should write some word on the diagnosis of mesothelioma cancer, the diagnosis is very hard due to some issues. One of these issues is the fact of the symptoms of mesothelioma take very long time to appear, the second issue is that the symptoms are similar to other non-dangerous disease.
Surgery Option: The first option for doctors to treat this type of cancer, in this method of treatment, doctors have to remove some parts from the affected tissue. These parts may be from pleura "the outer line the surrounds lungs". In some cases, doctor may remove the left or right lung due to the spreading of the cancer.
Chemotherapy option: In this method of treatment, some kinds of drugs will be used to treat the tumors in the body, the patient can take the pills that can travel through out the bloodstream to kill the infected cells. Chemical drugs can be put into the bloodstream bu using a needle to put them directly into the systemic region where bloodstream can carry the chemicals throughout the body.
Radiation Therapy: Radiations can make some effects on the cancer cells, they can kill cancer cells when doctors drop some radiation on the affected parts. Radiations such as Gamma rays and X rays can do the treatment. There are other treatment options but I wrote on the main options to take some information about the dealing with this disease.

Top Mesothelioma Diagnosis Options

The diagnosis of mesothelioma is very difficult for two main reasons, the first one is the time between the exposure to Asbestos and the appearing of the symptoms on the patient. The time between the exposure to asbestos and the appearing of the symptoms may be from 30 to 50 years. Yes, it is very very long time, and that is describe why many of mesothelioma cases are diagnosed nowadays. The Asbestos was using by the construction companies in the past so, mesothelioma that cased by the exposure to Asbestos are discovering now in patient that was working in these companies.
Mesothelioma diagnosis may occur by using some kind of radiations such as x-rays and/or (CT) scan to discover the tumors on the chest cavity, doctor may cut out a small piece from the pleural tissue or peritoneal tissue to test it outside.
Peritoneoscopy: In this case, doctor use a special medical equipment called Thoracoscope, doctor uses this medical equipment to reach the chest cavity and to see any abnormal parts on it. Doctor may cut out a small piece from the pleural tissue if he/she decided that this part must be cut out to be examined outside.
Peritoneoscope: In this medical operation the same thing that was mad with the chest cavity will be repeated with the abdominal cavity to take a look in the abdomen to test the peritoneum. As I wrote before, the peritoneum is the outer line surrounds the internal organs of the abdominal cavity so, doctor uses the peritoneoscope "another medical equipment to test the abdominal tissue" to reach the abdominal cavity and test the affected parts. The same action of cutting out a piece of the peritoneum tissue may be repeated if necessary.
